The US Civil War was never a necessity. If cooler heads had prevailed, the Southerners would have taken President -elect Lincoln's statements that he had no intention, nor the power to end slavery where it existed. Even as US President, Lincoln continually emphasized this.
And of course hindsight is always 20-20. Even the most adamant pro or anti slavery person, if given the choice, would never had wanted to sacrifice the lives of 620,000 soldiers and 1 million casualties over an issue that could have been negotiated.
