At about 1774, the population residing in Williamsburg, Virginia was about 2000 people. Just over half, 51-52%, were enslaved. This is a slightly higher percentage than the rest of Virginia at this time. Also, there were a few, but not many, Free Blacks in Williamsburg, but they were an exception, not the norm.
