The Civil War caused Virginia to split into two separate states over the issue of slavery. When Virginia seceded from the Union in April 1861, the western region, which had a different economic structure and less reliance on slavery, opposed this decision. Consequently, in June 1863, the western part of Virginia was admitted to the Union as the new state of West Virginia. This split highlighted the deep divisions within the state regarding the institution of slavery.

The Civil War political cause is based on beyond the official stance, what was the real political reason for the Civil War. The Democrats, by then known as the Slave Party, believed that slavery was protected by the Constitution, and that northerners were determined to end slavery and destroy the system they had grown wealthy with. The Republicans were former Whigs, to whom the abolition of slavery was important enough for them to split from the Whigs to form a party that would have this issue as its main focus. Lincoln, a Republican, was much more ambivalent about the issue of slavery than many of his more radical brethren. His main concern was keeping the Union intact.
The Methodist Church split into a northern and a southern division over the issue of slavery.
The Whig Party was split on the issue of slavery, which ultimately led to its collapse in the 1850s. The internal divisions arose primarily over the expansion of slavery into new territories and states, causing a rift between Northern Whigs who opposed slavery and Southern Whigs who supported it. This fracture contributed to the rise of the Republican Party, which united anti-slavery factions and absorbed many former Whigs.

One significant issue that led to the split in American society over slavery was the debate over the expansion of slavery into new territories and states. As the United States expanded westward, conflicts arose between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions, particularly over whether new states admitted to the Union would be free or slave states. This tension was exemplified by events such as the Missouri Compromise and the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which only intensified sectional divisions and ultimately contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War.
The issue of slavery split the party. "Conscience Whigs" in the North favored the abolition of slavery and halting the institution's spread into new territories. The "Cotton Whigs" in the South took the opposite viewpoints
