Lincoln himself had declared that he did not regard blacks as equals, so the rank-and-file were hardly likely to.

Most blacks in the Union army were ex-slaves who had simply tagged along with their liberators, neither side knowing what was to be done with them.

At first they were just used for menial tasks around the camps, usually wearing cast-off uniforms. Then some of the junior ranks realised that they might be promoted quicker if there were (presumably unpromotable) black troops serving under them.

In the end, there were whole black brigades, some of whom were sent out on operations.

The blacks helped the whites, and were totally and completely free, and fought for the union against the confederacy.

they faced many trials. if they were caught they would not be treated like prisoners of war they were either sent back to slavery or were killed.
