John Bell Hood was a famous Confederate general in the US Civil War. An 1853 graduate of West Point, he joined the Confederate army in 1861 and quickly rose in rank to full general (four stars) by July 1864. He fought in the Battles of Gaines Mill (Seven Days Campaign), Second Manassas, Antietam, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Atlanta, Franklin and Nashville. Hood lost use of his right arm at Gettysburg and his left leg was amputated after being wounded at Chickamauga. He assumed command of the Army of Tennessee before the fall of Atlanta and led the army on an unsuccessful invasion of Tennessee in November and December of 1864. Decisively defeated at Nashville on Dec 16, Hood retreated to Mississippi and resigned. He lived in New Orleans after the war, fathering 11 children before dying of Yellow Fever in 1879. Fort Hood Texas is named after John Bell Hood.
