Yes they are
1783 was the date of the Treaty of Paris which officially separated the 13 American colonies from Great Britain. At that time the eastern border of what would be called the United States was delineated by the former colonies that had a coastline with the Atlantic Ocean. At that time all of the 13 colonies had a water access route to the Atlantic Ocean.
The very earliest were all in Massachusetts, but all of them, the later ones included, were by the water, be it the ocean, Cape Cod Bay or a river. The settlers clustered to the coast because the weather was milder and England, and thus a lifeline, was just a little bit closer.
The atlantic Ocean
That would be Jamestown. They built a fort on the James River for protection from the Indians. They had some tough times for the first years. History tells us that they were starving, but I don't know if I buy it. Think about it. Think of all the fish, crabs, oysters and clams in eastern Virginia even today. Just think how much there must have have been back in 1607. There must have been an abundance of sea food. Plus there were millions of wild ducks and geese. So what happened. I don't think they were starving because of a lack of food. I think they got sick from trying to drink water from the river. When there is plenty of rain the river water would be fresh water. If it was a time of drought salt water would have come up the river from the ocean. There was a drought at that time.
it is called the Atlantic Ocean
