The United States entered World War I primarily due to unrestricted submarine warfare by Germany, which led to American ships being attacked and American lives being lost, notably the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915. Additionally, the interception of the Zimmermann Telegram in 1917, in which Germany proposed a military alliance with Mexico against the U.S., further inflamed public opinion. Economic ties to the Allies and a desire to promote democracy also motivated U.S. involvement. Ultimately, these factors culminated in President Woodrow Wilson asking Congress to declare war on Germany in April 1917.
The US and the Allies won the war and the US gained control of the Philippines, causing it to become a world power.
At the beginning of World War I, the US assumed an isolationist policy which basically means that we refused to get involved. While remaining isolationist, the US tried to get the other countries involved to declare peace.
