Many people in the North were war weary and the amount of Northern soldier losses were hard to take. Many Democrats and others sought a peace agreement of some kind. President Lincoln's strength and single minded purpose to keep the USA united cannot be over estimated. Despite all the problems he faced, his goal of ending the rebellion and later to abolish slavery was successful.
