George Rogers Clark won a string of victories on the American frontier during the Revolution. Starting in Kentucky with a unit of woodsmen Rangers, he prevented the area from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River from falling into the hands of the British and their Native American allies. His greatest single accomplishment was the capture of Vincennes, in what is now Indiana. He marched his meagre forces around a fort several times to convince the enemy commander that his troops were outnumbered. In another incident, the British were not able to bring their artillery to bear because the American marksmen were able to shoot and incapacitate the crew every time the gun port was opened to attempt to fire it. Clark paid for the expedition out of his own pocket and was reimbursed for only a fraction of what he spent on expenses.
