In Colonial times, children didn't have electronic toys, or factories to make their toys. Many children or their parents made their toys out of scraps and things that were not needed. Little girls in Colonial times made their dolls out of corn husks, rags, scraps, and sometimes carved, dried apples as heads. The boys used sticks as imaginary horses. Children enjoyed spinning tops made of leftover wood and string.

They were much stricter than schools today. Some teachers hit kids with their sticks or canes. Others locked them in closets for long periods of time.You get whipped if you didn't sit straight
A couple of reasons. Farm work, and help around the house, for one. Kids could earn money and the more kids, the more work. Besides, there was no birth control in colonil times, and the winter nights were long and cold.

Kids in colonial times did not ice skate like people do now a days. Kids did play on the ice but they just slid around on their shoes.
