The biggest mistake Britain's parliament made was that the colonial people were under their rule and expected repayment of costs and set taxes (eg. property, excise, poll) and laws (including Quartering Acts requiring colonials to house their soldiers) to retrieve some of the monies. The colonies took exception to this since they were not part of parliament and so were unrepresented.
