The US has printed $2 bills since 1862 so there have been many designs.

Small-size $2 bills issued since 1928 have had only 2 designs:

  • United States Notes (1928-63) show a picture of Thomas Jefferson on the front and his home Monticello on the back. These bills are distinguished by their red seals and serial numbers.
  • Federal Reserve Notes (1976-present) have a similar picture of Thomas Jefferson on the front and a representation of Trumbull's painting The Signing of the Declaration of Independence on the reverse. These bills have the same green-and-black color scheme as $1 bills.
