What enabled the English to challenge Spain's power of the sea and seek colonies in the north America?

The defeat of Spain's Armada was a major setback for the world power Spain had become. Also, English privateers made money by capturing gold being shipped from the New World back to Spain. The English, however, were not blind to the wealth the New World might bring to them. They established Jamestown in Virginia, a private but government supported company to reap the rewards of tobacco sales in Europe from their tobacco farms in Virginia and North Carolina.
