Virtually all democracies in the world are examples of representative governments. One specific representative government is the US. There, elected officials represent the opinions of the public.

Used loosely, both the United States and the United Kingdom employ types of representative democracies. As opposed to direct democracies, where the people vote on all of the laws set forth, a representative democracy allows for the people to vote for representatives, who then make and vote on laws as representatives of their constituents.

To get more specific:

In the case of the the United Kingdom, they have a parliamentary democracy.

The United States has a constitutional democracy, because the governing bodies that make the laws are (usually) bounded by the laws set forth in the constitution, which somewhat limits their power and allows for a system of checks and balances.
