Nathaniel Batts is known as one of the earliest English settlers in what is now North Carolina, United States. He arrived in the area in the early 17th century and is often considered one of the first European settlers in the region. Jacques Cartier was the first European to see the land that is now Vermont, in 1535. The French arrived in Vermont in 1734 and began construction on Fort St. Frederic. Settlers of the area joined with the British during King George's War. On March 4, 1791, Vermont was granted statehood.
