June 19, sometimes known as "Juneteenth", refers to the announcement in Galveston, TX by Union General Gordon Granger, on June 19, 1865, that the Civil War was over and that all the slaves in Texas were free.

Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862 applied only to areas that were in actual rebellion from the Union. Within the Confederacy, there weren't many ways for slaves to get the news. So the Confederacy's surrender, and the arrival of Union forces, were something of a surprise to the slaves in Galveston, TX.
