Late-date silver Roosevelt dimes (mid-50s through 1964) are generally worth their metal value unless they're in uncirculated condition. In average circulated condition, their value is determined mostly by the silver they contain. The price of silver changes every day, so check a newspaper or financial site for the current price, then multiply by 0.07 for a rough retail value. A dealer will pay half to 2/3 of that amount.
Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter next to the base of the torch. It may be blank or there may be a D. (The letters 'JS' next to Roosevelt's neck are the designer's monogram and not a mint mark.)
Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 01/2011:
No mint mark (Philadelphia):
Uncirculated - $5 to $70.00 depending on quality
"D" mint mark (Denver):
Uncirculated - $5 to $21.25
DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.

Unless the coin is in uncirculated or proof condition (in which case it may be worth a couple of dollars), the value of a 1961 US dime is probably just the value of its silver content. As of Dec 5, 2008, that would be about 68 cents.
