There are 3 different varieties of 1840 dimes, all with different values. The most valuable design has a billow of drapery extending out from Miss Liberty's left forearm (i.e. on the right side of the design as you look at it). As of 10/2008 the value range for this variety is $32 in worn condition, $100 if moderately worn, and around $400+/- with little or no wear. The next 2 do not have any drapery from the forearm, only a tiny fold appearing above her left elbow. If there is no letter below the word DIME on the back, the retail price range is $17 / $35 / $175. If there is a small "O" below DIME, the range is $25 / $75 / $500; however, the $500 figure is an average because even for a coin with minor wear, small differences can affect that number to anywhere from $200 to $900.
