1898 isn't a rare year for Liberty Head nickels. Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 03/2014:
Very worn condition - $4
Moderately worn - $9
Slightly worn - $22
Almost no wear - $71
Uncirculated - $120 to $2,130 depending on quality
The "V" on the back doesn't stand for Victory or Queen Victoria or any other word. Remember Roman numerals? "V" = 5.
