After the sinking of the Luisitania, a German named Alfred Zimmerman sent a telegram to Mexico. This telegram asked Mexico to take back the Southern states from the United States. The British intercepted this telegram and were more than willing to pass it on to the Americans(The British and French had been fighting for years at this time and needed reinforcements). Alfred Zimmerman's telegram had been the spark in a powder keg of hostile incidents towards the United States.

Three significant incidents that led the U.S. to declare war include the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan on December 7, 1941, which prompted the U.S. to enter World War II. Another incident was the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor in 1898, which fueled public outrage and contributed to the Spanish-American War. Additionally, the Zimmermann Telegram during World War I, in which Germany proposed a military alliance with Mexico against the U.S., helped galvanize American support for entering the war.
