Why were the five tribes called civilized?

The so-called five civilized tribes were the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Seminole and Creek. They were called this by the European settlers because they adopted many of the settlers' customs and had generally good relations with their neighbors.

What native Americans lived in the Southeastern part of North America?

As a simple answer, the Major tribes located in the SE United States are: * Cherokee * Seminole * Choctaw * Chickasaw * Muscogee / Creek Please be aware though that this could be further divided into smaller tribes or bands; Example: Occaneechi band of the Saponi Nation of Cherokee or Occaneechi band of the Saponi Nation of Iroquois are both correct; after being attacked they fled, integrating into the other tribes, but remaining distinct.

What is the Cherokee nation?

The Cherokee are a people native to North America, who, at the time of European contact in the sixteenth century, inhabited what is now the Eastern and Southeastern United States. Most were forcibly moved westward to the Ozark Plateau in the 1830s. They are one of the tribes referred to as the Five Civilized Tribes. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, they are the largest of the 563 federally recognized Native American tribes in the United States. The Cherokee refer to themselves as Tsa-la-gi or A-ni-yv-wi-ya - which literally translates as "Principal People"

What two large native amerivan groups dominated the eastern woodlands?

If you mean language groups, then the answer is Iroquoians and Algonquians. But not all Iroquioan-speaking tribes were friendly towards each other and not all Algonquian-spaking tribes got along with each other - so it is completely wrong to believe that they formed two political groups. For example: the Iroquois league dominated other Iroquoian-speaking tribes such as the Huron, Petun and Erie; and the Algonquian-speaking Mohegans and Pequots were rivals and political enemies.

What customs do Cherokee Indians have?

Every part of life for a native American (not just Cherokee) was dictated by customs / rituals. I only know of a few of the old rituals, that were different from other tribes. When a child lost a tooth, it was thrown on top of the house and a song was sung.Green Corn festival / dance.Maybe others can expand on this, as this is all I can think of at the moment. Please limit responses to unique customs of the Cherokee, not customs shared between all tribes.
