Cooking and cleaning were a LOT more involved in the colonial days than they are now. The women had to take an animal their husbands killed, take the feathers or fur off of it, slice it and cook it. They had to either gather wild fruits and vegetables or plant them, then harvest them, then cook them. They had to do laundry with nothing but a washtub or maybe some rocks down at the creek. They had to hang the laundry to dry it. They had to feed, clothe, and take care of the children. There was no electricity so all of their work started early, so it could be done by dusk.
In agricultural areas there were also cottage industries. Things like spinning wool and churning butter were performed on the farm site. Women would usually perform these tasks while men worked the fields. However, many cottage industries became unviable after the introduction of centralized factories in the 19th century.
