Dorothea Dix was aligned with the Union during the American Civil War. She served as a Superintendent of Army Nurses for the Union Army, advocating for the care of wounded soldiers and the establishment of better medical facilities. Dix was also a prominent reformer for mental health care and worked to improve conditions in asylums, which aligned her with the Union's values of reform and humanitarianism.
Dorothea Dix crusaded for humane treatment on the mentally ill. She began her work for the mentally ill in 1841.

Dorthea Dix was a important because she saw something she wanted to change. She saw that imprisoned peoples and peoples with feeble minds were not receiving a proper education. She started a class for these people.
As Director of Nurses for the Union Army, Dorothea Dix provided an equal standard of care to Union and Confederate wounded alike. This made her beloved in the South. In North Carolina, the state mental hospital was founded in Raleigh. It was closed and its functions transferred to the "Dix Unit" at Central Regional Hospital. Dorothea Dix was not related to John Adams Dix, the Civil War general whose name graces Fort Dix, NJ.
