In essence, it was about freedom. It determined that everyone deserved to live in freedom, that the words of the Declaration of Independence would apply to African Americans and all people of color, as well as Americans of European descent. It began as a struggle to preserve the Union, but took on a greater significance with the Emancipation Proclamation. Some say that it was about States Rights and Property, but that phrase was used as a euphemism for Slavery. The property was the slaves, and the right was the right to own slaves. Some say it was over Economy, but the difference was that the South had a slave-based economy that dictated its needs. If it was not fought for freedom, then all that loss of blood was only over the supremacy of the Federal Government over that of the individual States.
