Lincoln was assassinated when the war was just ended; he had no time to tend to the business of veterans...he was fighting the war. However, the US Civil War (1861-1865) did create one of the first "Soldiers Homes" for veterans, along with one of the nations first veterans groups...GAR (Grand Army of the Republic), which died out in the 1930's with most of the Civil War vets. The VFW is our nations oldest vet groups now, created in 1899 by Spanish-American War veterans (the Spanish-American war of 1898 was the US's FIRST foreign war).
