During the Civil War, North Carolina sided with the South. Most of the People in the lowlands and a majority in the Piedmont sided with the South. A majority in the mountains however sided with the Union. The state provided soldiers for both sides.
Early skirmishes occurred on the Outer Banks. The Union soon gained control of that area. The rest of the state remained Confederate until near the end of the war. The state manufactured a number of goods for the war effort.
In early 1865 General Sherman moved his army north from Georgia through the Carolinas. He won a number of battles and destroyed Southern Factories. By his march through Georgia, he had made it impossible for the factories of Alabama to provide supplies for the armies in Virginia. Now he marched through North Carolina. He destroyed the South's main arsenal in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Sherman had cut the South's main supply line. Grant could continue to hammer away at Lee's forces with powerful artillery.
North Carolina's main impact was to provide soldiers and supplies until the very end.
