In 1700, there were no official European settlements in Australia (although evidence suggests there were survivors of Dutch shipwrecks in the west). The only people known to inhabit the continent were the Australian Aborigines. Naturally, there is no way of knowing how many Aborigines there were on the continent in 1700, but prior to white settlement in 1788, there were believed to be between 300,000 and one million indigenous people.
