Lots of things. It's complicated.
Ultimately it all boils down to the question of "States' Rights", that is, does a state have the right to determine its own laws, or is it subject to the laws of the federal government? The answer turns out to be "yes and yes": a state may determine its own laws where those laws do not conflict with those of the federal government, but if there is a conflict, the Federal Laws "win".
Even more specifically, the two rights that anyone actually cared about at the time were 1. The right to keep slavery legal and 2. The right to secede from the United States. The fight itself was over the Confederate states attempting to secede (#2), but the secession was caused by fears that the federal government would override state laws and outlaw slavery (#1).

The Union began having battlefield successes against the Confederacy. Major Union victories at Gettysburg and the fall of Vicksburg led Union leaders to believe that the Confederacy would soon have to surrender.

They lacked great leaders, and at the beginning of the war were not fighting with as much devotion to the cause as the Confederacy.
it helped by freeing all the states that were fighting in the civil war and all the union states that had slaves
Yes people fighting for the Union, and people fighting for the Confederacy, went to Gettysburg to fight for their countries.
All of the states at that time either stayed in the Union or joined the Confederacy. Geographically. Geographically, there were no states in between the two nations. The Border States is the term given to the slave states that chose to stay in the Union. They included Kentucky, Delaware, Maryland, Missouri and West Virginia. (West Virginia succeeded from Virginia after Virginia succeeded from the Union in order to avoid fighting for the Confederacy.) They were all near the border of the Confederacy. They knew that whichever side they chose, there would likely be fighting on their territory.
Because the confederacy believed in slavery and the union did not. We northerners or we southerners did not like that we wanted are way only. So if this helps your welcome. Oh and the union won + Abe Lincoln was president during that time period.
