With the conclusion of all major combat in the American Civil War in the Spring of 1865, many North-South problems had only just begun. The daunting task facing both regions of America was how to 'reconstruct' the South for the sake of restoring prosperity in general and also for the sake of integrating the freed slaves into society. Other particular problems, such as passing much-needed reform legislation, readmitting Southern states into the Union, rebuilding installations and infrastructure, reincorporating former Confederate soldiers into society, preventing former slave-owners from dominating post-bellum society, and many other difficulties, were faced by those attempting to bring healing to the nation.
The southerners were still upset about losing and the nation had to come together after splitting up and having a war. I think the southern economy went down very fast too because of no slaves.
The North in 1865 was an extremely prosperous region. Its economy had boomed during the war, bringing economic growth to both the factories and the farms. Since the war had been fought almost entirely on Southern soil, the North did not have to face the task of rebuilding.
Despite its relative prosperity, the war had been costly for the North. Three methods had been employed to raise funds:
The era during and after the American Civil War is known as Reconstruction. Though slavery was abolished, racism was still abundant in the South and eventually birthed the Ku Klux Klan in 1866. Additional issues after the Civil War included a damaged economy, a lack of direction for former slaves, and the enforcement of Jim Crow laws which strictly supported segregation.
The South was faced with the overwhelming task of reconstruction. They basically had to rebuild everything that was destroyed during the war. This not only included buildings, towns, farms, etc., it also included their reputations. For quite a while after the war, Confederates were seen as no good and were not allowed to hold government positions. The South also had to face oppression from the North. After the war, all slaves were set free. The South did not like the idea of living amongst free black men and women, so they created Jim Crow Laws and Black Codes that oppressed Blacks. This laws and regulations did everything except take away their right to vote. Seeing that the South would not cooperate with the North's wishes, the Northern government split the South up into five military districts, each looked over by a high ranking military official and other soldiers. However, this plan did not last very long. As soon as the soldiers pulled out of the South, the Confederates returned to their early policy of Black oppression.
President Lincoln and the northern faction put the devastated and beaten South through reconstruction, would not allow men who had fought for the South to vote, forced the southerns who had no financial means to pay taxes on their homes or lose them, and the South had to fight the Scallawags and the Carptetbaggers who came South from northern states to take advantage of the South, which had no assets or help
The south wasn't making an income because most of their economic resources had been destroyed.
Two major problems were how to deal with the defeated Southern states and what to do with the ex-slaves. Both sides lost a large number of men and much of the South was destroyed by the war.
