Very weak at the beginning. The only existing large factory was the Tredegar Iron Works of Richmond VA.
Afterwards the situation improved. Thanks to the work of Gen. Gorgas there was a great development of mining for the extraction of raw materials needed to manufacture ammunition.
For the cast iron were established some 30 foundries able to furnish 50,000 tons of product every year.
Other new industries were:
- workshop for the production of copper, lead, and zinc,
- a large chemical factory was created at Charlotte (South Carolina) for the production of Mercury fulminate,
- a large gunpowder was founded at Augusta (GA) and other factories of the same kind were founded at Petersburg (VA) and San Antonio (Texas).
- the manufacture of ammunition started in the Arsenal of Richmond, Fayetteville an Selma (Alabama) Charleston (South Carolina) Asheville (North Carolina) and Tallahasse.
The created chain of industries was therefore able to compete with those of the Union, and succeed in sustaining the Confederacy war effort.
The most profitable industries in a poor southern economy following the Civil War were textiles (cotton) and steel. Due to the diminished workforce, people who did find work were not paid what they were worth, thereby creating a greater profit margin for companies.

Keep the ports open
Apart from carnage and loss of life, the Civil War caused the South to abolish slavery and lose its main export industry (: cotton; the growing and trade of cotton was taken over during the war years by Egypt and India). The result was - despite help from the Union to build up the Southern economy - that the South was to remain poor and economically backward until the enormous demands of the war industry of WW 2 finally got its economy finally up and running.

The South didn't have much industry, it was mainly a farming area. Their main export was cotton, I believe another top export was tobacco. The South didn't farm very much food, and with little industry they didn't have basic supplies like shoes. So the South needed to keep their ports open so they could receive food, shoes, and other important supplies. As a side note: The North did a pretty good job of blocking off Southern ports so the South experienced much hardship during the war.
He was one of the main Generals the South had during the Civil War. Many people said that the South would not have lasted nearly as long as it did in the war without the help of Robert E Lee.
