The Cheyenne tribe is thought to have emerged from Algonquian stock around the Great Lakes at some time around 1500, gradually moving westwards due to pressure from the Assiniboin. They did not encounter Europeans ("first contact") until about 1650 when some Cheyenne visited the French settlement at Fort Crevecoeur, near the later Chicago.

The French had no way of estimating how many people were in the Cheyenne tribe, since they only met a few of them.

Clearly, any attempt at giving a population figure for the 1500s must be entirely guesswork, since there is no evidence or record of the tribe at that time; one study gives a figure of 3,500 but this must be regarded as unreliable.
