Madam C. J. Walker was an entrepreneur; a pioneer of the modern hair care industry; a philanthropist who contributed to the YMCA, the NAACP and many black schools and colleges; and a patron of the arts. She is believed by many to be the first American woman to amass a million dollars in assets through her company and through her real estate investments.

She has been inducted into the National Business Hall of Fame at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago and the National Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York.
