Abraham Levi came to Victoria, Texas from Mississippi in 1848 with a stock of goods to sell. He set up his first store in a room at the Globe Hotel. From these humble beginnings he built the largest wholesale grocery concern in southwest Texas and eventually started the first and largest State chartered bank in Texas. He moved back to France during the Civil War returning to Matamoros Mexico where he opened a store and waited for the end of the war. He returned to Victoria, Texas following the war to find his home occupied by Federal officers. After petitioning the government his home was eventually returned to him. He continued to reside in Victoria, active as president of his Temple, Mayor and city alderman and elder counselor in his family's many business interests. He died in 1902 in Victoria at the age of eighty.
