At the time of the outbreak of the war, he was living in Louisiana, where he had made many friends, and he dreaded having to go North to rejoin his regiment.

To these friends, he wrote letters, warning them that the South would enjoy some early victories, but that they had too many disadvantages (especially lack of manufacturing industry), and that the war would swing against them.
