The colonists were British just as much as the British in Barbados or the Isle of Wight. The only became "Americans" after they had gained their independence and been recognised as a new country.

Along with many south and central American countries including Mexico, Cuba and Guatemala.
In the US Civil War, the South had a number of advantages. Perhaps one of the best ones was the fact that they did not have to conquer the North to win. Their goal for independence would come when the North no longer wished to continue the conflict.
The south was the back bone of the US so when they legally walked away Lincoln started the "civil war" aka USA vs CSA to take over the rightful land of the CSA

The Civil War officially started on April 12, 1861, when Confederate troops besieged and bombarded Fort Sumter, a Union-held fort in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina. The Union troops were overwhelmed and surrendered after a couple days.
