It seems probable that it derives from the visual similarity between the curved form of of the trunk/boot opening in this age of car, and the form of the false shirt fronts that were popular at the time, known as "dickeys" (hence "dickey-bow" tie). It may well also be linked to to the way they opened, mimicking the tendency for dickeys to pop or curl up if not firmly held in place (see comedy films of the era, ad nauseam...)
