Andersonville Prison was a confederate prison that was notorious for its cruelty towards union prisoners. I believe it was located in Richmond, VA.
Although the POW camp at Andersonville, Georgia was the cruelest Confederate POW camp by far, Union camps were terrible too. As an aside, the commander of the Andersonville camp was the only person tried for war crimes and was hanged after the war. This is an indication of bad things were in that camp.
Josiah and his comrades were captured during the Civil War when they were surrounded by Confederate forces during a skirmish. After surrendering, they were marched to a nearby Confederate prison camp. Eventually, they were transported to Andersonville, one of the most notorious prisoner-of-war camps, where conditions were harsh and overcrowded. Their capture exemplified the fate of many soldiers during the war, facing dire circumstances and suffering.
The Andersonville Confederate military prison is located on Cemetery Road in Andersonville, Georgia. The prison is now considered a national historical site, and is operated by the National Park Service.
