Robert E. Lee (Confederate General) surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant (Union General) at the town of Appamattox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

The surrender document was signed in the parlor of Wilbur McLean, ironically the same man on whose farm in Manassas Virginia the war's first great batle (First Battle of Bull Run) was fought in July of 1861. (McClean had moved his family 120 miles south in 1863 to escape the presence of the Union army.)
