It was a part of the opening operations of the Civil War in the East called the Peninsula or Peninsular Campaign that included the Battle of Williamsburg, the Battle of Drewry's Bluff, the Battle of Hanover Court House, the Battle of Seven Pines and when General Joseph E. Johnston was wounded Robert E. Lee took command on 1 June 1862. The battles that took place between 25 June and 1 July are recorded in history as the Seven Days Battles. McClellan launched the attack with the Battle of Oak Grove, and Lee countered with his attack at Mechanicsville called the Battle of Beaver Dam Creek. The Union Army of the Potomac started its withdrawal and Lee continued applying the pressure. The Battle of Glendale and the Battle of Malvern Hill followed. Richmond was safe for the moment and Lee was on the offensive. President Lincoln had to start looking for a General that was willing to fight.
