1880s
The sixteenth amendment which allowed congress to levy income tax. This allowed the US government to grow out of control, causing politicians to want to continue to increase taxes and grow the government even larger, while actually accomplishing much less per dollar spent. The Reconstruction Era, spanning from 1865 to 1877, was a pivotal period in American history as it aimed to rebuild the nation after the Civil War and address the complex issues of integrating formerly enslaved people into society. It involved significant political, social, and economic changes, including the establishment of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, which sought to secure civil rights and voting rights for African Americans. The era also highlighted the deep divisions between the North and South and set the stage for ongoing struggles over race and equality in the United States. Its legacy continues to influence contemporary discussions on civil rights and social justice.
