Strangely, the first officer in command of American cavalry was Polish; he was Count Casimir Pulaski, a former Polish freedom fighter he was appointed by George Washington to head his entire cavalry during the War of Independence. But this was also before the United States existed. In 1798, after the end of the war, the cavalry arm had almost ceased to exist, being reduced to just a single company of dragoons. This company was expanded by Congress to regimental size and it became the first genuine "United States Cavalry".
