Vikings 500 years before Columbus. Columbus did NOT find North America. He landed on an island in 1492 while looking for a water route to India. All but a small fraction of the books and people that would prove this were burned and killed by Christopher Columbus and his men in 1492-1493.

Purely by accident. He was looking for a westerly route to the Far East. Because he had grossly miscalculated the distance to India by sailing westward (estimating it at one third of the real distance) he managed to persuade the Spanish Government to sponsor the trip. Columbus by the way never discovered mainland America. He discovered only a number of Caribbean islands and remained for the rest of his life firmly convinced that these were situated close to the coast of either India or China.
