It was illegal for slaves to be educated. However, many slaves found ways to become educated without their masters knowing. Some masters were kind, to some degree, and allowed their slaves to learn. Those slaves taught other slaves.
The British offered them freedom if they served with them. An interesting historical fact is that many slaves found freedom on ships.
They didn't use slaves. In fact, they freed slaves they found in confederate areas. These slaves followed the Union forces to stay safe.
