The first shots of the war were fired by Confederate artillery on the waterfront of Charleston Harbour (The Battery) at the Union garrison on the island of Fort Sumter.

The ending of the war is usually marked by the surrender to U.S. Grant of the Army of Northern Virginia by Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House. That was the name of a tiny hamlet West of Petersburg, and the historic meeting between Grant and Lee was held in a converted tavern called the McLean House.
