Betty Friedan wrote a book in 1963 entitled The Feminine Mystique. It criticized the role of housewife and got a number of stay at home mothers to go out and get jobs. Then she became the main force behind the founding of The National Organization for Women in 1966. If you have seen a situation comedy on TV depicting life in the 1950s and compare it to life today, she is the person more responsible or to be blamed depending on your point of view then any other for the difference. (Of course such changes might have happened anyway due to economics.) Such shows include Leave it to Beaver, Ozzie and Harriet, I Love Lucy, and The Dick van Dike Show.
