The United States sought control over the Philippines after the Spanish-American War in 1898 for several reasons. Strategically, the Philippines served as a critical gateway to Asian markets, particularly China, enhancing U.S. trade opportunities. Additionally, there was a prevailing belief in American expansionism and the idea of manifest destiny, which justified the acquisition of territories to spread democracy and civilization. The U.S. also aimed to establish itself as a global power, and controlling the Philippines was a step toward that goal.

I have gone to the Philippines several times. Before they let off the plane, they give you a form to fill out saying how much cash you wish to "declare." On the form that i read it clearly stated that $10,000 was the maximum one could bring into the Philippines. I am not sure what happens to anything you might have over $10,000. Does the airline take it or does the Philippine government take it? I don't know. I don't think I want to find out...
