The first English settlements were made by people looking for riches such as gold and silver. Most of the subsequent settlements were established by people looking for separation from a government they saw as oppressive, or who were looing for land or trade opportunities.

Mostly for the same reasons everybody else did. Gold, religious freedom, adventure, and for the glory of God and the King. England won the U.S. area in the end because it had the advantages of national and religious unity, population growth, Joint-stock companies, a strong navy, a popular monarch, a peace treaty with Spain in 1604, unemployment, and it's inheritance laws. These last two were good because unemployment was a reason for people the leave and find work and inheritance laws in England gave stuff ( can't remember if it's land or money whatever) to the oldest son so younger sons had to go else where to find land or money.

Seriously, the English sent colonists for one main reason-gold. They believed the New World was lined with gold and all sorts of riches, but however, some colonies like Jamestown didn't have much success.

As they had no idea what they were going to, why would they think gold, they went to get away from religious persecution, and also just to settle.

Because the king of England want them to explore new land, and plus they had a competition with France on who gets the most land. They wanted to get away from the Church of England. They wanted to spread their own religion. They were looking for natural resources/ways to make a profit. Due to overcrowding of debtor's prisons in England, they were looking for places to send poor people who were in prison for not paying back debts, Georgia was founded for this purpose.
