ANSWER

The pilgrims sailed to the new world to find religious freedom.

ANSWER

They had to go away from Europe because persecuted by the Church. Cause of their different religion they were considered dangerous and heretics by the Catholic church. Regaurding the cause of why they were considered so... it can be said they were considered heretics because their belief had some points that couldn't be accepted by the Church: this from a purely religious point of view. the other reason is that the Church at those times was afraid that some religious groups if left "uncontrolled" could get too much power: this is from a more realistic political point of view. That's why the piligrims decided to sail to the new world.

How did the pilgrims set a precedent for religious freedom?

The Pilgrims sought religious freedom when they migrated to America in the 17th century to escape religious persecution in Europe. They established Plymouth Colony as a community where they could practice their faith freely, which set a precedent for the principle of religious tolerance and freedom in the founding of the United States.
