Regaurding the cause of why they were considered so... it can be said they were considered heretics because their belief had some points that couldn't be accepted by the Church: this from a purely religious point of view. the other reason is that the Church at those times was afraid that some religious groups if left "uncontrolled" could get too much power: this is from a more realistic political point of view. That's why the piligrims decided to sail to the new world.
