Colony created by Roger Williams (1644) for that very purpose, freedom of religion. He had been a minister in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, but was exiled into the wilderness during winter, because he was considered too liberal. When he reached the upper Narragansett Bay, he was befriended by Indians and settled there. He named the location Providence Plantations. Churches were not state sponsored or run by taxes, like in Massachusetts.
