they had no idea how to grow food for themselves, so a lot of them starved before the Native Americans could teach them (btw, Thanksgiving is "giving thanks" to the Indians for teaching us how to grow our own stuff).

Actually the Pilgrims had a pretty good knowledge about how to grow food, but they arrived in December, far too late to plant any crops.

This caused many to not work as hard to produce food and the food stores would run out in the winter and 7 out of 10 would die each year. At one point they even had trouble with cannibalism.
